Getting a GED

Adults who complete basic high school education have the opportunity to earn the equivalent of a high school diploma by taking the General Educational Development or the GED® test. This test is available to citizens who have not graduated from high school to demonstrate the level of achievement normally achieved by completing a course of study in high school. The GED® comprehensive exams cover reading, math, science and social studies. The pass score for the GED® is 145 or greater per subject.

Adult Basic Education (ABE) – ABE programs are designed to help adults improve their skills in reading, writing, mathematics, language acquisition and other basic skills. Students working below the ninth-grade level receive help to transition to Adult Secondary Education.
English as a Second Language (ESL) – ESL programs are designed to assist adult non-native English speaking students in communicating effectively in English. A number of resources and services are available to help these students improve and demonstrate their ability to speak, listen with understanding, read, and write English in order to function and be successful in the workplace and in postsecondary education and training.
Virginia is using the computer-formatted GED® for high school equivalency (HSE) testing. The GED offers individuals who couldn’t finish high school the opportunity to earn an equivalent credential. The GED contains four individual subtests (modules) in Math, Science, Social Studies, and Literacy.
Currently, the only Virginia Board-approved high school equivalency examination in Virginia is the GED test, developed to enable persons who have not graduated from high school to demonstrate the attainment of abilities normally associated with the completion of a high school program of study. Delivered in a computer-based format, the test consists of four content areas: Reasoning through Language Arts, Mathematical Reasoning, Science, and Social Studies. GED Testing Service is a joint venture of the American Council on Education and Pearson VUE.
