Athletics & Extracurricular Activities
Athletic teams and extracurricular activities teach and enhance students’ leadership abilities, introduce and strengthen a range of skills, allow them to be part of a community within a community, and facilitate new associations with others who share a common interest. The overall goal of both programs is to enrich the lives of Martinsville students beyond the classroom.
Athletics at MCPS are intended to expand upon our Physical Education program at the schools. The main purpose of our teams is to teach and encourage physical and mental health. Students learn to collaborate, compete, and set goals.
Preparation for team sports begins in the upper elementary years, where physical education classes include units with a variety of specific sport-based skills. Once in middle school, team sport competition is introduced to students, and is continued throughout high school at the junior varsity and varsity level.
Some of our sports teams include:
- Boys Basketball
- Girls Basketball
- Boys Cross Country
- Girls Cross County
- Boys Swim & Dive
- Girls Swim & Dive

MCPS students have opportunities to join clubs and organizations outside of the classroom. Offered at every level and in all of our schools, these clubs and organizations focus on the arts, community service, multicultural awareness, and other interests. Participation is a great way for students to get to know others with common interests, develop leadership skills, help the community, or just have a good time doing something they enjoy. We encourage self-reliance, knowledge of oneself, and a capacity for leadership.
Some of our extracurricular organizations include:
- Interact Club
- Chess Club
- Marching Band
- Gospel Choir
- Health Occupations Students of America (HOSA)
- Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA)
