This morning, Martinsville City Public Schools hosted a breakfast at Chatmoss to recognize seniors who have earned the Superintendent's Award.

To qualify for this honor, seniors must have a cumulative GPA of 4.0 or higher. Each student was presented with a cord to wear at graduation to signify their extraordinary academic achievement.

The keynote speaker at this year's Superintendent's Breakfast was MHS alum Luis Romero ('17), former News Director at BTW-21 and founder of rbs news now. In his speech titled, "Proud Past, Limitless Future: Advice from a Bulldog," Luis encouraged students to "go out and be the best version of yourself." He reflected on how his time at MCPS shaped him and prepared him for his career in journalism.

"The truth is, being in a small school system like Martinsville means your seen, you're heard, and you're supported," he said. "Not every student in every district gets that opportunity so be thankful and take pride in what you've received."

Luis also reminded the seniors that it's never too late to change your goals or your direction, and that there is no right time to discover your purpose.

"The beautiful thing about education ... is that no one can ever take it away from you," he said. "It makes you stronger, not just for yourself, but for your family, your friends, and your entire community."
