Local Policies and Procedures

It is the policy of Martinsville City Public School to adhere to federal and state regulations as they have been put into effect by the United States Department of Education and the Virginia Board of Education to implement special education programs for children with disabilities, consistent with the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA). Specifically, these mandates are detailed in the Regulations Governing Special Education Programs for Children with Disabilities in Virginia (Virginia Regulations) and any additional documents that the Virginia Department of Education publishes to address federal and state statutes and regulations for delivering special education and related services to children.

Credit Accommodations

Credit accommodations for a Standard Diploma shall be determined by the student’s Individualized Education Program (IEP) team or 504 plan committee, including the student where appropriate, at any point after the student’s eighth-grade year. The school must secure the informed written consent of the parent/guardian and the student, as appropriate, to choose credit accommodations after review of the student’s academic history and full disclosure of the student’s options.
